Not all trading strategies are equally suited to prop firm challenges. The challenge environment has specific constraints - profit targets, drawdown limits, time pressure - that make some approaches far more effective than others. Here are the five strategies most consistently used by traders who pass challenges and maintain funded accounts long-term.

    1. Trend Following on Higher Timeframes

Trend following is the most time-tested strategy in markets. On 4-hour and daily charts, BTC and ETH produce clear, sustained trends that provide reliable entry and exit points. The key principle: trade in the direction of the dominant trend, enter on pullbacks to key levels, and let positions run to a minimum 2:1 reward-to-risk target. Trend following produces fewer trades but higher quality setups - ideal for a prop challenge where patience is rewarded.

    2. Support and Resistance Breakouts

When major support or resistance levels break with volume confirmation, the resulting moves can be substantial. In crypto, which trades 24/7 with global participation, breakouts from consolidation zones often produce clean directional moves. The challenge with breakout trading is avoiding false breakouts - always wait for a candle close beyond the level before entering, and use a hard stop behind the breakout point.

    3. EMA-Based Trend Continuation

The 20 EMA and 200 EMA combination provides a powerful filter for trend direction and entry timing. When price is above the 200 EMA (uptrend), look for pullbacks to the 20 EMA as long entry opportunities. When price is below the 200 EMA, the reverse applies. This straightforward methodology removes ambiguity from trade selection and keeps you aligned with the dominant trend.

    4. Liquidity Sweep Reversals

Institutional participants often push price through obvious stop clusters - above recent highs or below recent lows - before reversing. These liquidity sweeps create predictable reversal zones. Identifying where stop clusters likely exist and waiting for a sweep-and-reversal pattern provides extremely precise entry points with tight stops.

    5. Session Open Range Breakouts

Crypto markets are particularly active during the New York and London opens. Trading the breakout of the high or low established in the first 30 minutes of a session is a systematic approach that captures early directional bias. This strategy is highly mechanical - entry, stop, and target are all defined by the opening range, removing discretion from the trade.

    Risk Sizing for Challenge Accounts

Regardless of which strategy you use, position sizing for a prop challenge should be conservative: risk 0.5% to 1% per trade, maintain a minimum 2:1 reward-to-risk on every position, and never risk more than 2% of your account on any single day. This sizing allows you to absorb losing streaks without breaching drawdown limits while generating consistent progress toward the profit target.
